The Desert Jewel

Located in Sakhir, this monument to modern motorsport engineering rises dramatically from the heart of the desert.

Since hosting its first Grand Prix in 2004, the Hermann Tilke-designed masterpiece has become one of the most anticipated stops on the annual championship tour. The 5.412 km track features 15 challenging turns that test the skill of even the most seasoned drivers, with technical sections and long straights providing ample overtaking opportunities.

What makes Bahrain truly unique is its adaptability - the circuit offers multiple layout configurations and was one of the first Formula 1 venues to introduce night racing under floodlights, creating a spectacular atmosphere for spectators worldwide.

Circuit History

2002-2003

Ground was broken for the Bahrain International Circuit in December 2002. Designed by renowned architect Hermann Tilke, construction teams worked around the clock to complete the facility in just 16 months, with special asphalt imported from a quarry in Shropshire, UK, to handle the desert conditions.

2004

The inaugural Bahrain Grand Prix was held in April 2004, making history as the first Formula 1 race in the Middle East. The Bahrain International Circuit welcomed the world's elite drivers, with Michael Schumacher claiming victory for Ferrari, beginning a new chapter in Formula 1's global expansion.

2010

The circuit experimented with the longer Endurance layout for the 2010 Grand Prix, extending the track to 6.299 km. This change reflected the circuit's commitment to innovation, shaking up the traditional F1 calendar with a fresh challenge. Fernando Alonso secured victory for Ferrari on this unique configuration.

2014

Bahrain made the switch to night racing, with the Grand Prix held under spectacular floodlights for the first time. The first corner was also renamed in honor of seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher.

2020

In a historic year, Bahrain hosted two Formula 1 races on different layouts. The traditional circuit hosted the Bahrain Grand Prix, while the shorter Outer Circuit was used for the Sakhir Grand Prix, delivering one of the most thrilling races in recent memory with Sergio Perez claiming his first victory.
